Asian Perfection – on Spain’s sunny Costa Blanca

Asia Gardens 4

Arriving at the Barceló Asia Gardens and Thai Spa is like entering a lush tropical paradise far removed from its location on one of Spain’s most popular costas. The beautiful property is one of a number of upmarket hotels that have sprung up in recent years on the Costa Blanca in southern Spain.

Set on the slopes of the Sierra Cortina mountain range some 150 metres above sea level, the Balinese-inspired five-star resort enjoys breathtaking views over the sparkling Mediterranean with  Finestrat, Benidorm, Altea and the bay of San Juan in Alicante clearly visible from the complex .

Space and light is maximised by the airy and authentic Asian architecture, which combines the latest green technology with the use of natural materials and artifacts from Indian and Thai palaces.

The 292 well-appointed rooms and suites come in different styles that reflect the contemporary Balinese theme. All have state-of-the-art amenities, supremely comfortable beds and access to the lush and colourful tropical gardens. Five restaurants, four bars and eight spectacular swimming pools (three heated for year round use) add to the many attributes of this remarkable resort.

The glorious gardens, set around beautiful outdoor pools are one of the resort’s most outstanding features. Designed to create a tropical Asian environment in a Mediterranean climate, they are planted with 200 different species. Many are Asian in origin, including a 200-year old Japanese bonsai and 40 different varieties of bamboo. The gardens are also home to 50 different types of palm as well as plum, citrus and pomegranate trees and a huge 200-year old carob tree.

Asia Gardens & Thai Spa is a perfect choice for romantic breaks,  golfing (two 18-hole golf courses are within walking distance of the resort) and family holidays, as the resort has  a kids club and entertainment team guaranteed keep younger guests happily occupied. The theme parks of Terra Mítica, Terra Natura and Aqua Natura are minutes away and the beaches of Benidorm, Altea and Calpe a short scenic drive.

The resort’s  pièce de résistance has to be the heavenly Thai spa – a serene oasis that extolls Asian healing cultures with natural resources and ancient therapies. These are carried out in luxurious surroundings with ultra spacious treatment rooms, quiet candle-lit relaxation areas, saunas, Turkish bath and a Zen-inspired in/outdoor pool. Massages are also offered in seven outdoor tatami stilt huts.

Kind, sweet and smiley Thai therapists, trained exclusively at Bangkok’s Wat Pho, balance your charkas with facial, body treatments and massages including traditional Thai, a therapeutic massage that uses gentle acupressure and stretching techniques to give the entire body a passive yet exhilarating workout. The spa also offers yoga sessions and Thai spa programmes with treatment packages spread over two to seven days.

After changing into the loose top and trousers provided, my treatment started with a traditional footbath. Then I lay face down on a oversized padded floor mat, while Orawan, my therapist, used her fingers, thumbs, elbows, arms and feet to pull, push and coax my body into the most amazing stretches. Despite the odd painful twinge when the knots of tension in my shoulders were worked on, I loved every minute of this energising, feel good massage.
