Malta Pampering – Corinthia Palace

This elegant five star hotel is situated in the centre of Malta, close to the Presidential Palace and colourful San Anton botanical gardens. Friendly and luxurious, it offers 155 bedrooms and 8 suites, great dining. a lovely outdoor swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and a super new spa. The hotel is run by Italico Rota – one of the best and most professional general managers in the business who treats every guest like royalty. Over the years, the hotel has hosted heads of state, prime ministers and celebrities like Pele, Roger Moore and Elton John.

The Spa

The new Athenaeum Spa uses French Algotherm products exclusively and over 50 treatments and therapies are available ranging from classical beauty treatments to holistic therapies, massage, body contouring and slimming treatments. The spa’s facilities include a heated indoor hydrotherapy pool, whirlpool, experience showers, oxygen bar, rasul mud chamber, sauna garden with two saunas and a steam room and a large shallow candle-lit Dead Sea floatation pool, in which I spent a most enjoyable half hour. There is also a state-of-the-art fitness centre and Malta’s first Kinesis Technogym – a chic new exercise regime with static pulleys and weights that create a personalised resistance-based training circuit for several people or individually The fitness centre also offers Pilates, aerobics, aqua-exercise, yoga and tai chi classes.

Medical, anti-ageing, beauty and wellness treatments are carried out by the spa’s professional staff. Cosmetic procedures include facial rejuvenation, non-surgical face lifts, dermal fillers and a vein clinic, while the weight management clinic offers dietary advice advice and non-surgical liposculpture. The liposculpture sounded intriguing and just what I needed, but I was booked instead for one of the spa’s signature treatments – the Chromo-Energetic Massage. Irena my therapist explained that the treatment uses elements of shiatsu, reflexology, Indian head massage, lympathic drainage, Swedish massage and body brushing. During the massage, the treatment room is flooded with a sequence of different colours to stimulate the senses. The massage was amazing but not altogether relaxing as I found myself trying to identify the different massage techniques. As for the chromatherapy – I didn’t really notice it – but then, I always close my eyes when having a massage!
