Winter blows out

It’s shorts and sandals weather here in Javea today – the last day of February 2015 – with even warmer temperatures forecast for next week (around 21°C),  not that we’ll be here soaking up the rays as we fly back to the UK tonight.

 

We’ve had sunshine throughout our brief stay, but also gale force winds. The first night I was awakened by what sounded like an intruder  upstairs. Turned out it was just the outdoor chairs waltzing around the tiled floor of the sun terrace in the wind! Yesterday afternoon, I was almost blown off my feet crossing the road but today, the air is still and warm. The gales have finally blown themselves out, creating some spectacular waves, which the surfers are taking full advantage of this morning. Bondi Beach comes to Javea!

The cheering signs of the approaching summer are all around – new shoots on spiky bougainvillea stems promising a magnificent display of purple, pink and red  in a few weeks, tiny buds of fragrant blossom on the orange trees and cheerful osteospermums opening up their pretty daisy heads in the warm sunshine. This is also the time of year when the ubiquitous oxalis weed invades every nook and granny in the garden. Although the bright yellow flowers are quite pretty, it makes the whole plot look untidy so has to be weeded out.
